Lemonade Crunchy Ice

Finding Power through Rituals, Art, and Meals

GIRL Project's Lemonade Crunchy Ice was a success! Workshops were held every Wednesday on Zoom from February to May, 2021 with 15 total sessions, including a culminating last session and video viewing. Through a safe intergenerational space, the youth explored finding our power through Ritual, Art, and the sharing of meals and culture. The group participated in theatre games and spent lots of time laughing. In between the levity was an opportunity to share experiences as BIPOC women including topics like police brutality, asian hate, closed schools, and standing up as women.

The program was led by our team of brilliant artists, teachers, and amazing humans. Our teachers create an intergenerational and interracial circle of sisterhood and within our programs and have each demonstrated their cultivation of life-long relationships with their students. We could not have had such full and meaningful 4 part program with out each of our teachers - Ellen Sebastian Chang, Tarika Lewis, Indigo Mateo, and Hamida Yusufzai.

Part 1: Ritual, Spells, and Superstition - The creation of original superstitions, spells and rituals that are for your own creative life powers.

Part 2: Sharing Meals as a Work of Art - We creatively set our tables as works of art and shared meals together. We spent time talking and singing about food.

Part 3: Games for Humanity - Using theater games to learn about the rights that all children around the world should have (inspired by the Declaration of Human Rights).

Part 4: Self-Care and Self-Defense - Discovering how to use self-talk as self-care and explore ways to manage your inner thoughts. Self-defense explores building awareness, protection, and empowerment as women.

A big thank you to all of our teachers–Ellen Sebastian Chang, Tarika Lewis, Indigo Mateo, and Hamida Yusufzai. Thanks to all our GIRL Project staff–Director Claudine Naganuma, Project Coordinator Simone Nalls, and Program Coordinator Shaunnah Ray. Supported administratively by Srinidhi Seshadri and Ellie Kerwin. A special thanks to the EastSide Cultural Center.
