“Petals and Wings” is a dance film by dNaga Dance Company, created collaboratively by people with Parkinson’s, dancers, and musicians, under the direction of Claudine Naganuma, with editing and videography by Solitaire Miguel. “Petals and Wings,” features our performance piece of the same name, which toured 2023 to the World Parkinson’s Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The film includes footage from dNaga’s week in residence at Paul Dresher’s New Music Traditions where we were able to include dancers who may have attended the Congress in the past, but were unable to go this year. This footage, which served as a backdrop of the WPC performance, is combined in “Petals and Wings” with footage from the final performance, to create a piece that is inclusive of the many people, and processes that contributed to this work. This was dNaga’s third time performing at the World Parkinson’s Congress.
“Petals and Wings” features music composed and arranged by Joel Davel, who opens the film by playing percussion on prescription pill bottles, as well as melody written and performed by violinist Joan Tarika Lewis. The audience hears the voices of people with Parkinson’s framing dancer’s adorned with butterfly wings.
